The Portsmouth Philharmonia was established in March 2009 by a small group of amateur musicians wanting to rehearse together on a regular basis. We have since grown in numbers and established a strong position within the local community. Colloquially known as the “Sunday Orchestra” or the “Charity Orchestra” we’re currently the most active Orchestra in Portsmouth.
Spence Bundy conducted the orchestra from its beginning until December 2014, before handing over the baton. The members of the orchestra will always be grateful to Spence for his help and expertise over the years. Hugh Carpenter has taken over as Musical Director, having helped the orchestra out for many concerts on the tuba.
We are ultimately a non-profit organisation and all of our ticket sales go to the selected charity of that particular concert. Members’ subscriptions fund music hire, venue hire and a conductor.
In 2017 we changed our name to The Portsmouth Philharmonic.
