Chantry Quire: Rossini – Petite Messe Solennelle

Chantry Quire is very pleased to be able to present Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle on Saturday 26 November in Petworth Parish Church at 7.30pm.

This work was written in 1863. Rossini had retired from writing operas over 30 years previously, but his operatic flair is very much apparent in this marvellous piece of music. At the end of the manuscript he wrote ‘Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather sacrilegious music? I was born for Opera Buffa, as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that’s all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise’.

We hope that you will be able to come and enjoy this powerfully spirited piece of music!
