Southern Pro Musica & Pavlos Carvalho, 13 May
CMS had been invited to join with Southern Pro Musica for their May 13 Concert at St. Paul’s Church in Chichester to hear a splendid programme of orchestral music. Conducted by talented Jonathan Wilcocks, the 30-plus orchestra started with a stunning performance of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, followed by a lyrical rendition, with its powerful conclusion, of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll.
The first half ended with Saint-Saens Cello Concerto in A Minor. Pavlos Carvalho is a wonderful cellist, and his performance ended with extensive applause from the packed audience, which resulted in a cello solo by Pavlos, a Sarabande from one of Bach’s Cello Suites.
After the interval the orchestra played Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony which the musicians played with skill, enthusiasm and energy. This was a very talented performance by the Southern Pro Musica orchestra, and the audience showed their extensive appreciation at the end of the concert with much applause.
