This concert will feature the University of Portsmouth Choir and the University of Portsmouth Student Chorus, accompanied by Anthony Groves on piano and organ, under the direction of Dr George Burrows.
The university choir was founded in 1965 and is made up of around 80 voices mixing university staff, students and townsfolk. It gives at least three concerts per year and has performed at home and abroad on concert tours. The Student Chorus provides an opportunity for students from within the main choir to develop their singing in a smaller ensemble.
The programme is a diverse one in several senses. At the heart of the programme is the sumptuous Soir Sur La Plaine by the extraordinary French composer, Lilli Boulanger (2018 marks the centenary of her death), Joseph Rheinberger’s Abendlied and Johannes Brahms’ Abend.
Soprano Rebecca Silverman will sing the solos in the Boulanger and in Laudate Dominum from Mozart’s Vespers.
Alongside such ‘classics’ the choir will sing contemporary pieces by such figures as Will Todd, Ruth Morris Gray and the African-American composer-arranger, Victor C. Johnson. There is something for everyone in this musical feast about eventide.
