Le roi s’amuse: Six airs de danse – Delibes

Cello Concerto in A minor – Saint-Saëns
Soloist: Mikhail Lezdkan

Pavane – Fauré

Symphony No. 1 in D major – Gounod

Havant Chamber Orchestra presents a programme of beautiful and dramatic classics by French composers – most of them not heard nearly as often as they should be!

Delibes was well-known for his music for theatre and ballet and we open the concert with dances from his compositions for “Le roi s’amuse” (“The King has fun”) – a play by Victor Hugo.

The Pavane by Faure is a piece you will recognise, but the Symphony No. 1 by Gounod, perhaps less so. Gounod was a prolific composer of songs and this influence can be heard in his first Symphony which is graceful and refined throughout.

The centrepiece of our programme is the Cello Concerto by Saint-Saëns. Unusually structured as a single movement with varied sections, the composer said that this piece was inspired by Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and it provides ample opportunity for both virtuosic display and lyrical indulgence by the soloist. After his thrilling performance of Tchaikovsky with us in February 2020, we’re delighted to be able to welcome back Hampshire-based Mikhail Lezdkan to perform the Saint-Saëns.
