Emily Gray (mezzo-soprano) and Timothy Salter (piano) return to Music on Thursdays with a selection of English songs from across the 20c revealing how composers moved away from the influence of late 19c German Romanticism towards the forging of an English musical language with its own character. They perform and discuss songs by composers including Hubert Parry, Ralph Vaughan Williams, York Bowen, Rebecca Clarke, Cyril Scott, Herbert Howell and Stanley Bate. The programme includes extracts from Salter’s Four ‘Hopkins Songs’.
