The main work in the concert is Pergolesi’s beautiful Stabat Mater. It was the last work the composer wrote before his untimely death at the age of 26. The work has achieved great popularity since it was written in 1736. It is a work of much variety and contains melodies of great tenderness and moments of high drama. The performance will be interspersed with arias and duets by Handel.
The rest of the programme contains music by 20th and 21st century composers – Britten, Tavener, Janacek, Arvo Pärt and James MacMillan – all of it is beautifully crafted and very approachable. Some of it is hauntingly beautiful.
