Music by

Weelkes
(and also Ralph Vaughan Williams)

Following on from their spectacular collaboration with The Consort of Twelve in their complete performance of Handel’s Messiah in July, Portsmouth Baroque Choir return to St Paul’s Church, Chichester, for a concert of music by Rheinberger, Vierne and Weelkes (and also Ralph Vaughan Williams).

We chose St. Paul’s in order to perform Vierne’s Messe Solennelle as it was originally written, for choir and two organs. The 1874 mechanical action organ by Hunter in the gallery is a fine but sparingly used instrument.

The 400th anniversary of the death of Thomas Weelkes has been somewhat overshadowed by that of William Byrd. We hope to redress the balance with a small selection of his anthems. Weelkes was organist of Chichester Cathedral, so it is also good to continue the local connection. It seemed appropriate to include O Lord, grant the King a long life in the year of the Coronation of His Majesty, king Charles III.

The second half of the concert has more of a ‘remembrance’ theme, starting with the Funeral Ikos, by John Tavener, who died 10 years ago in November 2013.

Vaughan Williams’ Lord, thou  hast been our refuge is scored for choir, organ and trumpet , which part will be played by a member of the choir.

We finish with the last work from the prolific pen of Josef Rhenberger, his Requiem Op. 194, [the last of his four settings of the text] which marked a return to a simpler, more serene and intimate style.
