Portsmouth Chamber Music Series: Ensemble 360 – Stravinsky, Coleridge-Taylor, Schubert

STRAVINSKY – Three Pieces for String Quartet (7’)
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR – Clarinet Quintet (31’)
SCHUBERT – String Quartet No.14 ‘Death and the Maiden’ (40’)

A concert of contrasts, showcasing the versatility of the world-class musicians from Ensemble 360.

Schubert’s deeply personal and beloved ‘Death and the Maiden’ string quartet is set alongside two lesser-known pieces written within a century but which could hardly be more different: Stravinsky’s compelling fragments for string quartet and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s exquisite clarinet quintet. The latter is arguably the greatest achievement in Coleridge-Taylor’s chamber music, by turns lyrical and muscular. It bears the unmistakable hallmarks of Dvořák’s profound influence on this tumultuous period of music.

Portsmouth Chamber Music welcomes back Robert Plane, now the ‘resident’ clarinettist with E360, for a performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s rarely heard but wonderful clarinet quintet. The concert starts with three short but fascinating pieces by Stravinsky, and concludes with one of Schubert’s finest string quartets, his ‘Death and the Maiden’.

Ensemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK not only for the quality and integrity of its playing, but also for its ability to communicate the music to a range of different audiences. Formed in 2005, 11 musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in Sheffield with Music in the Round, establishing a versatile group of five string players, five wind players and a pianist.

There will be a post-show Q&A with the artists and Colin Jagger of Portsmouth Chamber Music. To join his mailing list about classical music in Portsmouth, please email cjagger99@gmail.com.
