Havant Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Evening Concert, bursary auditions and plans for the next season

Becky Hill, chair, writes.

Havant Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is putting on its final concert of the current season at Oaklands School on Saturday 13 July at 7.30pm.

It will perform Three Dances from The Bartered Bride by Smetana, the Cello Concerto by Elgar, and Symphony No. 1 in C minor by Brahms.

This programme has been quite challenging but at the same time wonderful to rehearse. The Smetana is being conducted by the current Havant Orchestras Bursary Holder, Enyi Okpara, who’s just been appointed as the 2024/25 Calleva Assistant Conductor with the BSO. Here’s additional info.

The other pieces are being conducted by a previous Bursary Holder, James Thomas

The Cello Concerto by Elgar is one of the first orchestral pieces that I’ve played and it is a special favourite of mine. In parts of it the cello plays a solo line, and it’s a very rewarding piece for any string player.

At least five instrumentalists in the orchestra will be young people from the South-east Hampshire Youth Orchestra (SHYO). This has arisen from the two joint orchestras’ sight-reading sessions that we’ve held. We’re delighted to give this opportunity to the younger generation.

The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Peter Wade, our society’s president, and at least five councillors will be present at the concert. Doors will open for drinks and nibbles at 6.30pm.

Bursary auditions

On Friday 19 July we are holding our bursary auditions, which is open to season ticket holders. We had 11 applications for the Bursary auditions which we have shortlisted down to 4. Each conductor has 25 minutes to rehearse the orchestra, playing Schubert’s Unfinished Suite and the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite by Zimmer. It might be interesting to read on our web page who’ve been our past Bursary Holders, which include Mark Wigglesworth (Chief Conductor – Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) and Jason Lai (Yong Siew Toh Conservatory and Orchestra of the Swan).
