“Pipes and Voices” by the University of Portsmouth choir

This concert on 25 March with the University of Portsmouth choir celebrates the restoration of the Walker organ in St Mary’s Church with a programme of choral music that features the organ.

The concert is comprised of a whole range of music including Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens in an arrangement for organ and chorus, Dvorak’s wonderful Mass in D major, originally scored for chorus and organ, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, which famously featured the sound of a pipe organ. To add to the mix the University of Choir will perform unaccompanied pieces by Amy Beach, Rebecca Clarke and Gayathri Kemadasa.

The latter is a setting of Freedom by Rabindranath Tagore that was commissioned by the University Choir before the onset of the pandemic and it will receive its premiere at this concert.
