Portsmouth Choral Union: Christmas Carols and Music with Hampshire County Youth Orchestra

In conjunction with The Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, Portsmouth Choral Union will be holding their annual Christmas concert on Saturday 10th December beginning at the early time of 5.30pm.

As well as a selection of well-known carols and seasonal music – including plenty of opportunities for enthusiastic audience participation, there will be festive orchestral items from the orchestra.

A special feature of this concert will be an almost unknown work by a very well-known composer.  Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto is probably his best-known work – and certainly one of the most popular violin concertos. Very few people will have heard his Christmas Cantata Gruss an die Heilige Nacht – this atmospheric work has all the hallmarks of Bruch’s style – rich harmonies, varied orchestration and long-breathed Romantic melodies. Choir and orchestra will join together for this rarely-heard work.

In the lead-up to this concert, the choir will be holding an open rehearsal on Tuesday 8th November – we are always looking for new members, so if you would like to experience singing with us, why not come along.  If you are interested, contact our registrar at pcuregistrar@g.mail.com or just come along.  Our rehearsals are held at The Portsmouth Academy (formerly City of Portsmouth Girls’ School) St. Mary’s Road and begin at 7.15.
